Garret Janse was born in 1666 in Brooklyn, New York and was the eldest son of
Lambert Janse Dorlandt and Hermina Janse Peters. His first marriage was to Jannetje
(Jane) Schenck, daughter of Jan Martense Schenck, on May 20, 1692. This is listed in
the Holland Society Yearbook. Schenck was an early resident of Brooklyn, and the home
he built in 1695 is now on display in the Brooklyn Museum as an example of early Dutch
architecture in this country. The date of Jane's death is not known, but it is thought
she may have been the mother of Harmtje (Hermina) who was born in 1692 in Brooklyn.
Garret's second wife was Marytje (maiden name unknown). Garret and Marytje left Brooklyn
and joined Lambert on the family farm at Harlingen, New Jersey. Here they were all very
active in the Dutch Reformation Church. At Lambert's death, all his holdings went to
Garret Janse. Garret probably died around 1738 as that year he divided the family farm
among his three sons through a quit claim deed. He is buried in the Dorlandt cemetery
beside his wife Marytje an daughter Harmytje.
